What Is an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA)? A Simple Guide for Indian Students
If you are exploring a career in US taxation from India, the Enrolled Agent (EA) credential is the fastest recognized route in. Here is what it actually means, in plain language.
The credential
An Enrolled Agent is a tax practitioner authorized by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) — the federal tax authority of the United States. It is the highest credential the IRS awards, and it comes with unlimited practice rights: an EA can represent any taxpayer, on any tax matter, before any IRS office.
Unlike the US CPA, the EA has no degree, state-residency, or work-experience barrier. Your eligibility is decided by one thing only: passing the exam.
The exam: three papers
The Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) has three parts, each a separate computer-based paper:
- Individuals — income, deductions, credits, and filing for individual taxpayers
- Businesses — partnerships, corporations, S-corporations, and other entities
- Representation, Practices & Procedures — ethics, IRS procedure, and representing taxpayers
Each part is a multiple-choice exam, and you can attempt the parts in any order. Passing all three, plus a background check, earns you the credential.
Why it matters from India
US accounting and tax firms have large delivery teams in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and other Indian cities, and the EA is the credential they look for when hiring and promoting in US tax roles. For commerce graduates, CA aspirants, and working accountants, it is a focused, exam-only path to a global qualification.
